Walmart‘s e-commerce leader Casey Carl is leaving the company, according to a company memo sent on Thursday.
The top executive’s departure comes as the big-box retailer tries to capitalize on the pandemic-related growth of its online business, expand its third-party marketplace and better compete with e-commerce giant Amazon.
Carl, a longtime Target employee, became Walmart’s chief ecommerce officer in 2020. He will leave at the end of February, according to the memo.
Another Walmart executive, Tom Ward, will permanently step into the role as of Feb. 1.
Ward, who is senior vice president of last-mile delivery, has led an effort to turn dozens of Walmart’s stores into hubs that can help the retailer keep up with its growing online grocery orders. Walmart is working with several different technology partners to turn a portion of its stores into automated fulfillment centers with robotic systems that prepare orders that for delivery or curbside pickup. Ward has also overseen pilot programs that have tested deliveries by drones and autonomous vehicles.
